Company Profile

Museum of Boulder

Company Overview

Founded in 1944, the Museum moved into its new building in downtown Boulder in May 2018. The grand opening of its permanent exhibits will be held this November.

The Museum of Boulder is owned and operated by the Boulder Historical Society, a private, non-profit 501(c)3 organization that is not affiliated with the city, county or state. Although it has received some financial support from the City of Boulder in the past, it is primarily funded through contributions, grants, membership fees and facility rental. It currently employs five full-time and two part-time staff members, supplemented with interns and volunteers. The Museum of Boulder is governed by a volunteer Board of Trustees.

Its 7,500 square feet of exhibition space is in a historic-landmark building that was completely renovated in 2017-2018. In moving into the new building, the Museum has transitioned from a more traditional “pioneer” museum into a platform for state-of-the-art and interactive exhibits and inclusive programming, exploring all aspects of Boulder past and present, including its unique history of cutting-edge science, sports, technology and food innovations. The Museum’s collection includes 700,000 documents, 200,000 photographs and over 45,000 artifacts that chronicle the history of the area.
