Located along the Sacramento River in a transformed historic power station, the SMUD Museum of Science and Curiosity (MOSAC) is a bold civic investment in learning, access, and opportunity. MOSAC is Northern California's interactive science center and a growing anchor of Sacramento's riverfront. Born from a decades-long public-private partnership—including the City of Sacramento, SMUD, Sacramento County Office of Education, UC Davis, and a broad network of donors and community leaders—MOSAC represents both vision and persistence brought to life. Today, MOSAC features more than 100 interactive exhibits across health, energy, environmental science, water systems, and space exploration. The museum includes the UC Davis Multiverse Theater, classrooms, labs, and a maker space designed to support hands-on, inquiry-based learning.

Since opening in 2021, MOSAC has quickly become a regional destination for families, educators, and community partners seeking engaging, hands-on STEAM experiences. MOSAC welcomed approximately 180,000 visitors in 2024 and 158,000 visitors in 2025, reflecting strong and sustained regional demand as the museum continues to refine programming, grow school partnerships, and expand its reach. At MOSAC, thousands of children walk through our doors each year and experience something powerful: the moment curiosity clicks. For many, especially students from Title I schools, this is not just a field trip. It is their first hands-on encounter with science as something they can see, touch, and imagine themselves being part of.
The next Executive Director will build on this foundation and help define what MOSAC becomes for the next generation. This is not simply a leadership role. It is a chance to shape how an entire region connects to science, education, and possibility.

SMUD Museum of Science and Curiosity has reached an important inflection point, and the next phase is about unlocking that potential. The next Executive Director will translate early momentum into long-term sustainability, expand earned and contributed revenue, deepen community engagement, and build a clear and compelling strategic direction for the future. This role requires a leader who is equally comfortable inside the organization and out in the community—guiding internal operations while actively building relationships with donors, partners, educators, and civic leaders.

The next Executive Director is a confident, mission-driven leader who combines vision with execution. They are a strong communicator and relationship builder who is comfortable leading in a visible, community-facing role. They are energized by fundraising and partnership development and understand how to translate mission into meaningful support. They are strategic, but grounded. They can make decisions, set priorities, and move work forward. This is a leader who is as comfortable engaging with students and educators as they are working with donors, board members, and civic leaders.

Prior executive or senior leadership experience is preferred. Experience in museums or cultural institutions is helpful but not required.

The salary range for this position is between $205,000 and $225,000 with a competitive benefits package. This is a full-time, in-person role based in Sacramento, CA.
